This is what happens when you enter La Monastica. An immediate sense of calm and comfort takes hold, reassuring in the same way as feeling at home. The magic of this hotel, which embodies the spirit of genuine hospitality, can be felt from the very first moments. It is the result of a meticulous restoration project that has brought to light the essence of an ancient monastery while combining it with the aesthetics and functionality of contemporary living. It is the outcome of a project conceived with a profound sense of responsibility towards a place where nature and history intertwine and invite us to slow down.

The art of subtraction

The restoration of the former Monastery of Santa Scolastica is a perfect example of how restoring a historic building often means far more than rebuilding walls, consolidating façades or adapting old spaces to new functions.
Over the centuries, the building underwent so many transformations that years of historical studies, documentary research and analysis of ancient maps were required before work could even begin. The challenge was not simply to decide what should be preserved, but also to identify which elements were authentic and which belonged to later transformations.
Choices had to be made: whether to consolidate or replace, whether to reveal or leave concealed, whether to reopen an ancient passageway or preserve a later alteration.
It was a complex yet essential process, given the history of the monastery itself. Founded in 1517 and most likely built later, towards the end of the sixteenth century, on the remains of the walls of the thousand-year-old castle, it was subsequently enlarged to incorporate the Church of the Visitation and partially redesigned in the early twentieth century by architect Ferdinando Pacini, responsible for two of its most distinctive features still visible today: the loggia and the small tower.
Across nearly five centuries, the complex also changed its identity and function several times: first a convent for women, then private property, a summer residence, a Franciscan monastery and finally a Benedictine convent once again.
Each change inevitably brought further alterations: new buildings were added, existing rooms reorganised and new cells, corridors, rooms and connections created to meet changing needs.
This helps explain why almost twenty years were needed to create what is today La Monastica Resort & Spa: a contemporary place where history remains a living presence and from which seems to arise the distinctive atmosphere one experiences here, a blend of silence, light, nature and calm, as though time itself had finally learned to slow down.

The protective power of materials

Perhaps the philosophy behind the restoration can best be understood by starting with the walls.
Some of them are in fact older than the monastery itself and belong to the first fortification of Buggiano Castello, built between the end of the tenth and the beginning of the eleventh century.
They have stood for more than a thousand years and, once their defensive function had disappeared, parts of them were neglected, dismantled or reused in other constructions.
To consolidate what remained, extensive studies and assessments were carried out before using advanced materials and reinforcement systems, with one very clear objective: to keep technology hidden and allow history to remain visible.
The same principle guided the restoration of the interiors. Stone, wooden beams, arches, surfaces and colours were not treated as decorative elements to be displayed, but as living parts of the architecture.
The intention was never to turn the ancient monastery into a kind of historical archive, but rather to allow its authentic materials to continue being lived in.
And those exceptionally thick walls, originally built for defence, seem to retain something of their ancient purpose even today. They shield the interiors from noise, protect and embrace, contributing tangibly to the sense of intimacy that accompanies anyone entering La Monastica.

Rediscovering the light

Beyond the stone, there was another, apparently immaterial element that needed to be recovered: light. A sixteenth-century monastery was designed around needs very different from those of contemporary hospitality. Rooms could be small, routes through the building complex and interiors intimate and dimly lit. Over the centuries, moreover, many openings and passageways had been altered or closed.
Where possible, the project therefore sought to recover the original openings and restore lost perspectives, allowing natural light to return.
This was a fundamental choice because light profoundly changes the way we perceive a space. It softens the impact of massive walls, creates depth and, above all, establishes a continuous relationship with the outside world. The sky, the garden and the landscape visually enter the building and become part of it.
In such an ancient structure, characterised by substantial walls and considerable thicknesses, finding this balance was essential: preserving the feeling of intimacy without allowing it to become a sense of enclosure.

The same search for openness naturally extended to the garden.
Its nine terraces belong to the monastery’s own history, although documents show that over the centuries they underwent various interventions, transformations and extensions. When the restoration began, they had been abandoned for years. Landslides and uncontrolled vegetation had profoundly altered their appearance.

The invisible work

Here too, the visible result was preceded by extensive work that can no longer be seen: stabilising the ground, improving drainage, rebuilding retaining walls, restoring stairways and making the structures safe. Only then was it possible to think once again of the garden as a place to be lived in rather than simply as a green backdrop, and to make it an essential part of the La Monastica experience.

The planting was carefully designed to create areas of shade and light, open views towards the landscape and more secluded corners, seasonal flowering, fragrances and different sensations throughout the year. The swimming pools were incorporated into the terraces in harmony with the greenery, the ancient walls and the view across the valley.
Above all, space itself was preserved.
The space to walk, to stop, to find a secluded corner, to look out across the Valdinievole or simply to follow the geometry of the garden with the eye. There is therefore no clear boundary between indoors and outdoors. Windows draw the landscape into the building, while arches and pathways naturally lead towards the garden. Nature and history become part of a continuous whole.
Comfort is also born from this: from being able to move without feeling constrained, from sensing space around you, from not being constantly stimulated by excessive architectural elements.

It is a discreet form of luxury, created more through subtraction than addition.

When the past suggests the future

During the restoration work, surprising spaces also emerged in which ancient architecture itself suggested a new purpose.

This happened, for example, with the base of a collapsed medieval tower. Instead of treating it simply as a ruin to be preserved, it was recognised that its massive stone walls could become one of the most intimate and evocative spaces dedicated to wellbeing.
A pool filled with warm micronised water was therefore created inside the tower. Stone surrounds the space, the lighting remains subtle and sounds become muted. What was once most likely a defensive structure has changed its function completely and yet, in some way, it continues to protect.
From here, a passageway leads to a seventeenth-century cistern, which has also been restored and transformed into a relaxation space with loungers crafted from Swiss pine.
Two places originally far removed from the modern concept of a spa have thus become the heart of an experience that could never have been recreated in quite the same way anywhere else.
This intuition gave rise to the Paradiso dell’Anima, one of the most exclusive expressions of La Monastica’s concept of wellbeing: not a sequence of treatments, but a space where stone, water, silence and intimacy come together and naturally invite guests to slow down.

Comfort is also about human connection

Architecture alone, however, is not enough to define the feeling created by La Monastica.
A true sense of hospitality emerges when the human dimension is added to the spaces themselves. In this respect too, La Monastica seems to have inherited something from its past.

For centuries it was a monastery governed by precise rhythms, a place of contemplation but also of care, attention and hospitality. Today that vocation takes on an entirely different form, yet something of the same principle remains.
True comfort is not simply about the quality of a room, the beauty of a bathroom or flawless service. It is also the feeling of being welcomed without being intruded upon, looked after without excessive formality and given the freedom to shape one’s own time.
Service therefore becomes part of the same search for balance and harmony that guided the architecture itself. Present when needed, discreet when it is right to leave space.

It is precisely from the meeting of these two dimensions, the physical quality of the surroundings and the human quality of hospitality, that the distinctive feeling of staying here is born: difficult to define, yet immediately recognisable.

From this perspective, the MICHELIN Key, awarded to La Monastica by the MICHELIN Guide in 2025 and confirmed again in 2026, takes on particular significance.

More than a final achievement, it can be seen as external recognition of the coherence of the entire project. The MICHELIN Key considers elements that go well beyond the quality of a hotel’s facilities: the character of the architecture and interior design, authenticity, personality, the quality and consistency of service, comfort and the connection with the surrounding area.

Different qualities that, at La Monastica, ultimately come together. Because what feels natural today is in fact the result of a complex and often difficult restoration process. And perhaps this is where the deepest meaning of the restoration lies.

Not simply in having brought an ancient monastery back to life, but in having restored its ability to do what, in different forms, it had done for centuries: offer shelter from the noise of the world, preserve silence and give those who enter the time they need to find themselves again.

By Manuela Aramini

The hotel’s magic and charm is part of our authentic hospitality spirit; you can feel it as soon as you walk in

[66,67,39
77,69,68,70,75,72,74,71,73,53,49,76
post-8417","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-art","category-history","category-wellness","tag-art","tag-calm","tag-charm","tag-comfort","tag-heritage","tag-history","tag-italy","tag-nature-2","tag-project","tag-silence","tag-travel","tag-wellness-2
["GET
